SNES9x Discontinued Part II Jerremy Koot sent the following e-mail to SNES Emulator Review:

"First let me start with saying that Snes9X has been the greatest project that I have working on ever ! It was fun to do and every time I went to #EMU I knew why I was doing it... But all of this has ended....

"Due to several reasons Snes9X can't continue... One is a possible claim of Nintendo... But you probably all think that that's the main reason, it isn't... Another reason is getting fucked over by other people, this is probably a more important reason... And then there is one more reason which, due to circumstances I can't even explain...

"But all in all, I would like to thank all the users for the great support, I've been reading several web pages and see that Snes9X is said to be either the best and/or the most used emulator on the World... This does make me smile from deep down inside... Seeing that since 5 July 1997 I had 500.000 hits probably proves that it was/is used a lot, with the latest DOS version getting 14.000 hits in two days, not even counting the number of times it was downloaded from other sites, shows how much people loved Snes9X.... So to all the Snes9X users: THANK
YOU, IT WAS GREAT !

"A small note for all the developers out there who see a chance in getting the Snes9X source, we will not give it away ! So don't mail me or Gary about it ! If you want to do something for the SNES emulation 'scene', then help authors like zsKnight, _Demo_, Lord Esnes, NLKSnes, etc.

"And to all those emulation wannabe's, if you think you can program an emulator, just start and see where it leads, because maybe you'll have your own Snes9X!"

- Jerremy Koot
One of the author's of Snes96, Snes97 and Snes9X.

Thanks to Zach for the news.

Juno First to Support RType II! Chris Hardy has just announced that he is working on adding support for RType II to his Juno First emulator!

Currently there is no sound and it only runs under 16-bit colors, but from the above screen shot, it looks like Chris has made a lot of progress.

There is no release date as of yet so the author is asking that you NOT send him e-mail about the state of the emulator or when it's going to be released. He's working on it as fast as he can. An announcement will be posted here as soon as it's released.

Looking for PSX Info Programmer Sadruddin Rejeb is developing a Sony Playstation emulator for Linux. He is looking for information on the Playstation's GPU, GTE and also the CP0 control processor. His e-mail address is [email protected].

SNES9x Discontinued SNES9x, probably the best and most popular Super Nintendo emulator has been discontinued. Gary Henderson had decided to resign from the SNES9x team a few days ago mainly as the result of the recent Mr. Grim/ZSNES/SNSES9x controversy:

"I've had enough of the constant battles with other emulators, junk e-mails, abusive e-mails, sick e-mails, e-mails from people who don't bother reading the README file, personal attacks, liars taking credit for things they didn't do, etc., etc."

However, it appears even greater events transcended this resignation.

"...but events have overtaken that and it looks like its the end of Snes9x for me, Jerremy and everyone else. I'll leave it to Jerremy to fill in the details, but I can say that Nintendo are involved."

Real Nintendo 64 Emulators in the Works? A person by the name of Michael Tedder has announced his intention to develop a Nintendo 64 emulator.  Michael claims that is not a "fake piece of trash that simply displays some pretty pictures in a window, or tells you to buy a faster computer.  This is the real thing that a majority of the Internet thinks is impossible."

Michael is developing this emulator in C++ intended for the Windows 95 / DirectX platform. According to the author, this project is in the very early stages. He asks that he not be bombarded with e-mails about when he will release it. (Rest assured that if and when a release is made, it will be posted on EMU News Service.)

Also, another programmer, Saggy wrote to say that he's working on a Nintendo 64 emulator called Ice CreEm 64:

"This has been into development for 2 months now. I'm just revealing it now. I still need docs on graphics and sound. If you have docs e-mail me at [email protected]."

PDP 8 Emulator for JavaScript! A programmer by the name of Neal Sample has written a PDP-8 emulator in JavaScript! This was written for a computer science class taught at the University of Wyoming. What's a PDP-8 you ask? The PDP-8 was a minicomputer introduced in 1965 by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). At the time, the PDP-8 was a revolutionary machine - costing only $10,000 (a small price back then).

http://plains.uwyo.edu/~nsample/pdp8/main.htm

I did some research and found a picture of a real PDP-8:

Finally, how's this for a user interface:

SNES9x 0.24 for Win95/NT Released Yesterday!

Saturnia A Fake A few weeks ago, Opiv Rox came forward to announce his intention to develop a Sega Saturn emulator with several other fellow programmers. His announcement drew lots of attention. SaturnWorld, a popular Sega Saturn site even did an interview with him*. Many people had their suspicions about him from the start (including myself). But there was no real evidence to prove these allegations - until now.

Recently, Opiv Rox posted on his site the following screen shot as 'evidence' of Saturnia's progress:

However, this picture is not from Saturnia as Opiv Rox claimed. It's from a screen shot of Sega's Virtua Fighter PC:

http://www.sega.com/products/productdb/screenshots/pc/pcvfigscr3.gif

Please note that everything's exactly the same - the characters (Rage and Wolf), the move, the clouds in the background and even the exact time on the clock.

When I confronted Opiv Rox about this, he confessed and removed the Saturnia homepage.

"Saturnia is a fake! We were going to make a real one but we didn't have enough time. We did start making the Saturnia but then I asked my girlfriend to marry me and then after that I didn't have much time on the Saturnia. And for the reason, I couldn't just say to people I'm stopping the emulator. Everyone was soooooo excited about this emu project."

* One final note: SaturnWorld's interview sparked some negative feedback on the part of Saturn owners against emulation.

Mac XNes ver 0.20 Released! Richard Bannister has just released version 0.20 of his MacOS port of Nicolas Hammel's XNes emulator. It supports all the advances made in the DOS original plus these Mac-specific features:

Looking for Virtual Boy Information Programmer Jason Sperske is looking to develop a new Virtual Boy emulator:

"I'm looking for everyone who knows or wants to know how to program an emulator. This will be a very open project, source code will be published.  I'm looking to make a DOS port first but it will go where ever the members want it to go. Support for stereo glasses and such will be down the line. If your interested then please e-mail me at [email protected]."

Jason is also looking for technical data. If you have any sort of information on the Virtual Boy, please send it to Emulation Programmer's Resource so that it can be made available for any programmer wishing to develop a Nintendo Virtual Boy emulator.

Nintendo Wins Battle Against Game Copying Devices Next Generation is reporting that Nintendo has reached a settlement with Game City. Game City was selling ROM image copying devices called Doctor V64 and Game Doctor. As part of the settlement, Game City agreed to a $100,000 fine as well as the permanent end to all sales and distribution of Doctor V64 and Game Doctor. The lawsuit was filed in May on the grounds that Game City was violating Nintendo's copyrights.
